What to Pack for Pet Boarding

A short, practical packing list so your pet has everything familiar during their stay.

Published August 26, 2026

Once you've chosen a facility, packing right helps your pet feel more comfortable and keeps their routine consistent.

Essentials

  • Their usual food — enough for the full stay, plus a couple of extra days in case of delays. Switching foods during boarding can upset their stomach.
  • Medications, clearly labeled with dosage and timing instructions.
  • Vaccination records, even if you've already sent them ahead — physical copies avoid delays at check-in.
  • A leash and collar with ID tags.

Comfort items

  • A blanket, bed, or toy with a familiar scent
  • A favorite toy, if the facility allows it
  • Written notes on their routine — feeding times, favorite spots to be pet, any quirks staff should know about

What to leave at home

  • Anything valuable or irreplaceable — items can get lost or damaged
  • Excessive toys or bedding — most facilities have limited storage
  • Human food or treats not cleared with the facility

Double-check before drop-off

  • Confirm vaccination requirements are met
  • Confirm emergency contact information is current
  • Confirm pickup time and any last questions about their stay
